Eye contact, women usually take an active role in courtship through the use of eye contact. Women have a barrage of different kinds of glances they use to initiate the courtship. When a woman enters a room, party or singles bar she will begin with what is called a room encompassing glance. She scans the entire room for about five to ten seconds without making eye contact with anyone. She is surveying the men in the room who look interesting. When she finds her target she will use short darting glances in which she gazes at the men but looks away within three seconds. When she has finally decided which man she would like to engage she will make eye contact with the individual that will last for more than three seconds. Usually the individual male will return the glances and approach. "
