"In relationships this is something that you really have to consider. Self-disclosure is reciprocal, and if you want to build strong relationships, if someone self-discloses to you, you need to self-disclose back to them. And this might be a male-female relationship, or a best friend relationship. This you see a lot more of outside of the workplace, but I have a best friend; she tells me everything; I never tell her anything. Okay, there's an imbalance. What that says to her is that I don't trust her. Well, she trusts me, but she thinks I don't trust her, because I never tell her anything. So, that relationship is going to be in trouble. The same thing with male-female relationships, romantic relationships. She divulges everything, he says nothing, or vice versa. Relationships in order to be successful should have about the same level of self-disclosure, otherwise; you're going to probably run into some problems. And if you're in a relationship like that where you're not disclosing anything, and they're doing a lot of disclosing, you want to work on your self-disclosure. If you're disclosing everything, and they're disclosing nothing, you want to encourage them to work on their self-disclosure, or possibly move on."
