" Hello! I’m Stephany of Stephany’s Simply Sewing on behalf of expertvillage.com. We’ve made a garment together, but I’d like to recap a little bit of what we do when we’re selecting a pattern or going through this as a beginning or novice sewer. One of the first things you want to be sure and do is get a pattern that maybe says “easy to sew.” Those generally have few pieces are a little bit easier to put together. The next thing you want to consider is your fabric. I chose this fabric because it’s very similar to a shirt that my husband already owns that he likes a lot and has almost worn out. You want to be sure that the interfacing that you use in your collar, cuffs, and plackets is appropriate for the fabric that you have. You want to be sure that your stitching and your beginning and ending stitches are nice and neat. The other thing you want to do is make sure that what you want to do with your garment your sewing machine can handle. Now, I’ve used my grandmother’s sewing machine in order to produce this garment. I do however have several computerized, more advanced machines that I use. But I did want you to know that you don’t have to invest a lot of money in a sewing machine in order to make a garment that looks handmade instead of homemade. I want you to realize that sewing is fun. Relax, enjoy it, and just have fun with making your garments. "
