Sewing a Collar: Attaching Collar Stand to Shirt

" Hi! I’m Stephany from Stephany’s Simply Sewing, on behalf of expertvillage.com. I’d like to show you how we attach our collar unit to our shirt. As you can tell, we’ve already got our shirt with our 2 fronts our attached to our back at our shoulder seams. We’ve also got our collar, which has been attached to our collar stand. We are not ready to attach our collar stand to our shirt. The marks that you have made, here are your notches, and these notches will match our back of our shirt. This is going to be sewing a semi-straight seam to a curved seam, so you’re going to want to be very careful as you pin and place your collar stand on your collar and match your markings. I’ve matched my notch. This match is going to go towards this seam, and I want to be sure and match it to the seam and not my topstitching mark from when I made my felled seam. I’m going to match that one and then as I come around I have another dot to match, and that dot is right here, which is going to go along this edge. Now, as you can see, we have quite a bit of fabric that we have here that is straight up here. This is where we get into the finesse or the working of our fabric. This is also why we did our stay stitching along this seam. Imagine how distorted it would be if we had not done the stay stitching. I’m going to ahead and kind of work this seam into pressing it. As you can tell, if you just rub it with your fingernails a little, you can straighten out and localize that seam so it fits quite nicely and pin. That is how you begin to attach your collar stand to your body of your shirt. "
