" Hi! This is Roy Stringfellow for expertvillage.com. As I mentioned earlier, one of the materials that we’re going to be needing to build clay pots is obviously going to be some clay. Clay comes in a variety of types. There are low fire clays, medium fire clays, and high fire clays. What we have to do, which we’re going to use one of, is a low fire clay, which is a micaceous red, and a medium fire clay, which fires what we call a cone 5 at maturity. Clay can come in, as I said, variety. The purpose of the selection of the clay is going to be what is it that we’re going to be using the object that we’re building for. The low fire clay can be used for a variety of things. It doesn’t require a lot of stress or heat applied to it after it’s made. The medium and high fire clay can be used for dinnerware, dish ware, and a whole lot of other maybe a little more flexible objects. So the first thing we’re going to do is select the clay. I select the clay based on it’s workability and the firing temperature that I would like to have, as well as how well this is going to receive a glaze. Micaceous clay, if we don’t do it the right way, the mica in the clay just simply goes away. So what I’m going to do is select this clay, which is a medium fire clay, and the first thing we’re going to do is simply cut off a piece of this clay for our next step. It’s going to look something like this when we’re finished, and take it to the wedging table. "
