Sewing is a very popular craft that is almost universally used. Its origin dates as far back as the Paleolithic age (30,000 BC), and is usually used to make clothing or home furnishings today. There are several different methods and stitches involved with sewing that all serve a unique purpose depending on what is being made. In recent centuries, the advent of the sewing machine has made the process much easier and faster and has allowed garment makers to make a superior product in almost half the time. Today most of the sewing that is done by hand is for repairing damaged garments or finishing those started by machines.
Most sewing concepts can be applied to sewing projects for kids, although creativity often enters into the equation. In this free video series, our sewing expert will teach you how to sew a shepherd costume for a toddler, all while teaching you invaluable sewing techniques, such as trimming pockets, stitching neck openings, and securing grommets. You'll also learn about what materials you need, side stitching, and fastening ties. Improve your sewing skills and techniques with these video instructions!
"Hi I'm Shelly with Expert Village, today I am focusing on projects you can do with your children or grandchildren very simple projects. The first one we are going to do is a pocket organizer made out of old jeans, so its a recycle project and I have three here that I made with my grandchildren while we were on Christmas vacation. You can hang it on the wall and you can put scissors, markers, notebooks, whatever they want to and hang it on the wall. Supplies, are two pairs of old jeans, one for the legs and one for the pockets, scrap cardboard, permanent fabric glue (make sure it is permanent and not what they call washable) accessories however you want to decorate it. You can use iron ons, appliques, buttons, lace, and also grommets. When you buy grommets you can also buy the tool, you do not need players but you will need a hammer with that. So when you get all your supplies together we will get busy making an organizer."
