"This is Randall Powell for Expert Village and in this clip I am going to talk to you about progressive rounds and how you win team roping's. They start out usually either a 3 header or a 4 header. That means you are going to rope with the same partner. You will get a chance to rope 3 or 4 steers depending on the roping you are at. Now a days, usually it is a 4 header. So on the first round, they will usually pay a fast time on the first round. Team roping is a timed event. So after the first round you have the fastest time, you will usually draw a check. Almost all roping's I know are progressive after 1. That means if you don't catch your first steer you won't get a 2nd, 3rd or 4th or anymore after 1. You have to catch to keep going. After you rope your first steer, you are going to come back and rope your 2nd. If you catch your 2nd, then you get to rope your 3rd steer. After you have 3 steers down, they will determine the average of all 3 of those times combined and they will place you in a short round. The short round is the last and final round of the roping. That determines after the short round, you will know who won the roping and what places you got and so forth. After the 3 head average, you've got to go into the short round and rope your cow there and if you rope there and have a smooth run or a penalty run whatever, they just take that average of all 4 of your times and they determine who won the roping by the average of all your times there. Usually they also pay the fast time in the short round. Like if you are really long and you are not looking like you are not going to place in the roping but you did qualify for the short round like you are in the top 30 and you are 30th out and probably even if you have a good time probably you won't place in the roping, you just want to go out there and throw really fast and get you a round check for that short round. That explains a little bit more about the progressive rounds and how you participate in team work. "
