"This is Randall Powell for Expert Village and in this clip we are going to talk about penalties and legal catches while team roping. When team roping the header is going to get in to the box, the heeler is going to get in the box, they come out to rope the cattle and the legal catch is you have 3 legal catches for the header. The legal catches are a half head which is going to be the rope around1 horn, the steers head but not the other horn and their slick horns which is the rope is going to be around the horns only, not around the nose or any part of the head. That is the most preferred catch because you can get the best handles out of that catch. The other legal catch is just to rope him around the neck. Rope both horns and the neck, everything all together. That is the legal catch and the illegal catch is if you have a figure 8, if your rope comes across this horn and figures 8 before it gets to this horn, that is an illegal catch. If the rope comes around this horn and then you are going to have a half head but it figure 8's around the nose, any figure 8 in your rope is going to an illegal catch. Also you can't rope any front legs while you are heading or heeling. You can't rope any front legs if you are heeling. You can only rope the back 2 feet and you can just rope the slick horns or the half head or the neck. Those are the legal catches in team roping. "
