Position Steer for Rodeo Roping

"This is Randall Powell with Expert Village and in this clip I am going to tell you about the position of the steer where it needs to be when you need to start roping. As you come out of the box, you want the steer to run just straight down the pen as you can get him. If the steer is running a little left, the header needs to kind of get a little wider with his horse. If the steer is running straight down the pen, the header is going to go right to the hip and rope him. If he is running to the left and the header breaks wider, it is going to push the steer back straight. On the other hand if the steer is going to the right, it is the heeler's job to push his horse up towards the steer head. It's called riding the steer high and when you get up on their head that way, it will send them back to the left if they are running right. So basically you want the steer to just as soon as he comes out of the shoot, you need him to run straight down the pen as you can get him and whenever he is loping down the pen, it's a timed event so the faster you rope him the better but you really want him running straight down the pen so your header has a fair shot at catching him and he is going to have a lot easier time handling him and stuff like that, getting his dally if the steer is running straight down the pen.
