Serger Sewing: Understanding the Thread Position

Continuing with our tour of the serger at the back of the machine at first glance doesn’t appear that there’s too much that’s interesting here but one of the keys to operating these machines is the fact that we need devices on the machine to make sure that the thread flows smoothly through the machine. As I mentioned before these machines can sew at fairly high speeds so that the thread is unwinding at a very high speed, now we’re able to have a complete set of threads that are on a base here we have at the bottom of the base we have a soft rubber cushion that enables the cone of thread to sit on top of that and inside there on the spool pin we have a support device which is able to come on and off the machine depending on the type of thread spool that you’re putting on. We also have back here a telescopic mass which when the machine is being transported it can be pushed down so that it’s out of the way and also we take one of these spools off there is a slot back here to enable you to carry the machine because the machine is a little bit heavy and it needs to be supported right in the center so that it doesn’t slip of drop out of your hand. We also have a couple of plugs here which are covering screws which would attach the cover of the machine."
