"Hi! My name is Nick. I'm a professional body piercer over at Studio City Tattoo in Studio City, California. On behalf of Expert Village, we're going to go ahead and talk about how a piercing closes up and how to prevent it from happening. In general, if you remove your jewelry while your healing process is still going on, your piercing will close quite quickly within a day or two. If you remove your jewelry when your piercing is healed. Everyone's body is different, but most of the time after a couple of days your piercing will shrink to the point where you aren't able to comfortably get your jewelry back through. Ways to prevent that would be purchasing a small retainer that basically hides your piercing but keeps the piercing still open. Now, if you do remove your jewelry, it does shrink and you do need to get back open, you can come in to a professional shop and have what's called tapering done, which simply restretches the piercing up to the size of the post that needs to be at for the jewelry to sit right. That is how to prevent and help with a closing piercing."
