"Hi! My name is Nick. I'm a professional body piercer over at Studio City Tattoo in Studio City, California. On behalf of Expert Village, we're going to go over all the different types and materials of jewelry. The most typical material in body piercing is surgical steel. Surgical steel is typically used in just about every body piercing. It's lightweight. An hypoallergenic alternative would be titanium, which can be anodized in different colors. Niobium, which usually comes in black. There's 18 carat yellow and white gold made with palladium and not nickel. That's fine for an initial body piercing as well. Pyrex, which is also hypoallergenic and will not give you any problems for an initial piercing, especially for large gage ear jewelry. Other materials would be stone, acrylic, silicone, and different types of wood. These materials here you would not want to use for your initial piercing, but you do not want to use them for a healing piercing because they're what's called porous. Porous material can harbor bacteria and cause infections. You do not want to use these materials for your initial piercing. These are the different materials in body piercing jewelry."
