One of the major mistakes that a student makes in writing an essay, or anyone does for that matter is incomplete sentences. I would like to focus on 2 types of incomplete sentences. The first would be a fragment. A fragment is lacking a subject or verb or a complete thought. Let me give an example. These are very elementary examples. John fell and saw. John fell and saw is an example. It has a subject verb but it really doesn't make it a complete thought, so we need another word here. John fell and saw what. Okay. Now, if we take off the John, you certainly wouldn't have a sentence fell and saw. "
