on 8/2/2008 There really is no "how to" aspect to this presentation. This presentation lacks any steps or sequences. For example, I might say, "How to Write an Introduction to your Essay." Step one, write down the main thrust of your essay. Step two, refine this as much as possible so that it's only one or two sentences. Step three, brainstorm ideas about this pithy main thrust of yours. At this point, you can be go absolutely insane. Zaney ideas are welcome. (You will likely not use these crazy ideas for a graded paper, but the creative process can't be held back if you want it to function the way it should. Creativity functions well in a completely free, nurturing environment. If you're not creative in this way, then use current events, humorous anecdotes (unpublished stories) or something relevant and topical (from your school, town, city or neighborhood).

If the subject is the psychological effects of advertising on body image in young girls, then use a vivid, colorful example of someone who is controversial, like Kate Moss. Discuss her latest or most prominent news event.

The (story, evidence, current event) idea that you choose will bring cohesion to your essay. In other words, it will string the essay together like a necklace, or a motorcycle chain. Write these fresh, new ideas of yours into your introduction. Mention these same ideas again in the conclusion.

Video Transcript

"Hello! I'm Peggy Charlton for Expert Village on how to write an essay. I'm going to talk to you about introductions. After you've gathered your materials together and kind of have it organized into your body, which will be intro, first, second, third point, and conclusion. Then we'll start on our introduction. Introduction is probably the most important part of your essay. Just like it's the most important part of a play. When the play starts if it's boring at the first one minute, no ones going to watch it. Same thing with a TV show, movie, anything. You've got to catch that audience. In your case, the audience is going to be your professor. Perhaps your professor has already read 30 essays and they're all just ultra boring and he's giving maybe bad grades. By the time he gets to yours and he actually sees a clever introduction, he's going to be so excited. Perhaps the rest of the essay might not be that wonderful, but that introduction has been so creative and fantastic, it's like that person grading that essay has got a whole new view point the rest of the essay. Introduction, so important. Catchy introduction, a must. "
