For Expert Village.com this is Matt Friedman, owner of the Blue Creek Candle Company. In this clip we will be talking about colors for your candles. As with your sense, make sure that the dye that you use is specifically designed for use in candle making because again the amount of dye, type of dye that you use can affect on the burn quality of the candles that you are going to be making. Dyes come in different forms. There is a powdered form, a liquid form and a block form of dye. The liquid form and the powdered form are very concentrated so you don’t need to use a lot. It only takes a half ounce of either one of those forms of the dye to color up to a hundred pounds of wax. Now with your block forms what you will usually do is slice off approximately a 1/8 inch sliver and add that into a pounds worth of wax. Personally I don’t find that to be very precise so I prefer to use the liquid dyes that come in these nice little bottles. Just squeeze out a drop and add it until you obtain the color that you are looking for. Just like everything else in candle making you are going to want to experiment with your colors. Mix and match until you get the desired affect and one of the things I like to tell people is when you smell the scent try to associate a color with that. Once you have that image in your head, go ahead and try to create that color to match that scent and things are going to work out great for you.
