Walking is a skill that is as old as humans. Even before the evolutionary leap to homo sapiens, our scientific ancestors had already learned to walk upright. Unfortunately we humans may not walk as upright as we would like in the twilight days of our lives. The posture starts to hunch a bit as the back loses the straight line of youth, and we may even need some assistance to do things which we had been doing perfectly all of our lives, such as walking. This is why we may just need a cane.
In this free series of woodworking videos, a wood crafts expert will demonstrate how to make a cane from a tree branch. He shows you how to shape and sand the cane, and gives you tips on how to decorate it as well. You will also learn how to make a handle for your cane, and reinforce the structure so it will be sturdy and safe. So why buy an expensive cane when you can craft your own for free? All you need is a tree branch, a few basic tools and these videos from Expert Village.
"Ok today we are going to make a cane out of a tree branch. So you are going to need a good nice straight tree branch, this is one I found out in my yard, and I have already trimmed the edges. This is what a finished cane looks like. This one is a little bit short, because it was made for a short person, but it will show you the basic parts of the cane that we are going to make. To do this you are going to need a drill, something to make a top plug with, a spade bit to drill hole for the plug. You're going to need a thick lag screw, like this. You can go longer than this if you want, but for the purpose of our demonstration for today this one will be fine. You're going to need another drill to drill down for this screw. I'll show you this on our next clip."
