"So I'm going to help you out big time here by helping you learn how to remove your square-taper cranks so you can recycle them because it's a pretty outmoded system for mountain bikes, and we can find some better uses. So the first step is finding either an 8 millimeter Allen wrench or a 15 millimeter box-end wrench that you use to remove your crank bolt. I don't have a crank bolt for this system, but you push down is what to remember. So on the drive side, that's a counterclockwise rotation. On the non-drive side, it's clockwise. So with cranks, we've got some weird threading stuff going on. We pull that down, we get rid of our crank bolt, and then we choose the appropriate crank puller to pull it off. So in my right hand, the blue crank puller is the one that we want to use. It's for square taper cranks. The yellow crank puller has a bigger button head on there, and that's for the ISIS style cranks. So what we do - let's just pretend that this is still on your bike because it's not going to be on otherwise. You see there's threads in here for the crank puller to thread into. Play around; wait to find some good, solid thread engagement. Thread this in until it bottoms out, and then we push against the spindle with the puller until it's off the interface. So that is how you finally, once and for all, rid yourself of the specter of the square-tapered crank. You can move on to something lighter, brighter, safer and better."
