"Okay well now that we have two layers laid out I have one layer of batting and one layer of the robing that I've arranged. And if you have multiple layers of robing make sure that you have at least three layers and you want them to crisscross in different directions. So where I have one layer laid out here all running this way you'd want to do another layer with all of your fibers running the other way so that you be sure that you have a nice even arrangement and that you have enough layers so that you can't see through all your layers. Now the next thing I'm going to do is going to be the surface design which is going to show up. Whatever you put on the surface is going to be what you're going to see. So if you have other layers in the middle that are hidden they're not going to show on your final surface. But since this is a scarf I'll have two sides that I can decorate. So I'm going to do a couple different techniques when I'm decorating. I have in my hand some unspun silk that's been dyed a different color. Silk itself does not felt but the fibers will hold the silk in place so you can lay very thin wisps of silk on your surface and when your wool shrinks up that'll give you a really nice surface effect. I'm also going to lay some other colors of wool. I have some blue that matches my silk. I'm going to lay that out on my surface, too. And that's going to give me some bigger splashes of color so I'll have some different textures but all in the same color. The other thing I'm going to do. And I'm going to do a pattern all over my whole piece. Is I have some little bits of yarn as my third design element. These have all been chopped up into little pieces. This is merino wool again. But you can also lay bits of yarn on your surface of your wool and that's going to also stick to your wool as the felting progresses. And give you a third design element. So there's a lot of different things that you can do to add to your surface for your decorative elements. Just play around with it."
