How to Digitally Label Your USB Flash Drive With Your Information?

Summary: Have you ever Lost your USB Flash Drive on shared computers in your office or school? This little tip will show you how you can label your USB flash drive with your name and phone number (or any other personal information), so that you may have more chance of getting it back. It will digitally label your USB flash drive. So whenever it is connected to computer, it will show your information (name or phone number) in My Computer, instead of just giving drive letter. And, if anybody finds your lost USB, there is a greater chance that he can call and return it to you. (Video tutorial does not contain audio.)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open your USB drive. And Right click on empty space.

  2. Step 2

    Go to New, and Click on 'Text Document'.

  3. Step 3

    This wil create new text file on your usb drive. Open the text file and write down following:

    [autorun]
    label=Your Name (###-###-####)

    (Write your name and phone number, or whatever information, you want to put here)

  4. Step 4

    Go to File, and click 'Save As'. In 'File name:' box, write down 'autorun.inf'. (Check video.)

    From 'Save As Type:' box, select 'All Files'. Click Save.

  5. Step 5

    This will create autorun.inf file on your usb drive. (Make sure that you create this file in the root directory or your usb drive, not inside any folder.)

  6. Step 6

    You can right click on the autorun.inf file and go to properties. On the General tab, check box of 'Hidden' and 'Read only'. This will hide the file, so it is not visible to anyone unless they have 'Show hidden files and folders' enabled, which most people do not have. (This is not shown in video tutorial.)

  7. Step 7

    So, Now whenever you plugin the USB into any computer, it will show your information in the 'My Computer'.

    This is fairly easy tip, but it can reap great benefits if you ever lose your USB drive!

  8. Step 8

    You can eve put your photo as an ICON for USB flash drive!
