How to Sew a Zipper on a Backpack: Part 3

"Hi I'm Karen for Expert Village. I'm moving my needle over to a different position, you want to make sure that you needle is in the right position for your zipper foot. We are sewing a quarter inch away form the zipper teeth. Then back up a little bit to knot it and now to do our top stitch we are going to turn the fabric of the body inside out. It is actually right side out now and we would do our top stitching. It is a little trickier because you need to watch out for the fabric as you sew the top stitching. You need to watch out for the fabric underneath. So just open that out and again we are going to go a eight of a inch away from our seam and we folded the fabric over like this. Open the tape up so the tape is flat and we would be sewing on top of this fabric and it will sew the tape and the fold over fabric. It will sew it all together so it will make a nice strong application to the zipper. You want to check frequently that our fabric is not scooting up under there and getting sewn in. If it happens you simply take it off the machine and get your seam ripper out and take it apart. Then start over again. So I'm going to go one time another eighth of a inch away just for the nice look of a double stitching. Now we have our backpack body completed and all of other pieces our top section with the zipper strap and our bottom section. Next we would be assembling the whole bag."
