How to Prepare a Patch for Appliqué

"JEANETTE WHITE: Hi. I'm Jeanette White from Expert Village, and we're doing English method of hand applique today. In our last segment, we've transferred our design onto our background fabric on the back using a brown micron pen. We want to make sure we don't soak through. The next step is we're going to take our applique patch fabric. We're going to put it on the front side of our background fabric, and you need to make sure that it is covering the entire design. Now, you can do that by holding it up to the light and looking through, or you can place pins in a parameter going around your drawing that you've just done and then transferring it to the front and taking your applique patch and placing it. You just need to make sure you have a big enough piece on your applique patch to cover the whole design that you've drawn on the back. Now, you're going to pin this in place, and you don't need a lot of pins, just a couple in the corners. And we are going to take our heavy quilting thread and our heavy needle, and we're going to do our knot. And we will begin doing a basting process of just following our little line all the way around and do little tiny stitches. We want to go little tiny stitches all the way around. And you're going to want to follow this all the way around. What this is doing is giving your fabric a memory of where to turn under when we actually start the applique process."
