How to Choose Fabric Patterns for a Quilt

"JEANNETTE WHITE: Hi. I'm Jeannette White on behalf of Piper's Quilts & Comforts in Sugarhouse and Expert Village. Today, we're going to be talking about selecting a fabric for the binding on your quilt. It's always a dilemma, and sometimes, the fabric that you really, really like won't especially work well. The best way to do it is unroll it a little bit off of the bulk and then fold it unto a diagonal or a triangle like so because now we have our bias grain. You can see this wonderful polka dot a when we fold this on the bias, and then we lay a ruler which would be simulating where this hook on to your quilt. We get this very strange thing of this polka dot that's kind of rolling off here and then we get this blank spot here and then it starts up again. And as cute as this polka dot is, it really does not make a very good bias binding. So, we're going to set that one aside. Now, we move on to a print and when we do the same thing with that, we've completely lost the whole darling print of this little piece here. So, an all over print really is not a very good choice either. However, plaids and stripes are wonderful, and we will be talking about that one in our next segment."
