"Hey this is Jerimae Yoder with Expert Village today I'm talking about solo performing. The next thing I want to talk about is picking the right songs make sure you know your audience I'm going to say that a lot throughout these segments. Now your audience now who you are catering to and know yourself who are you as an instrumentalist or as a vocalist or as a solo artist. Who are you and what do want to portray on the stage? If your going to be playing a lot of bars and specifically in a smaller town and things like that people generally want to hear cover songs. It's kind of a bummer I love creating my own music and I love doing original songs but people want to hear something thats familiar so a lot of times you need to come out of the the whole with something thats going to grab people and bring people in. If you start doing an original that nobody's ever heard before they're probably going to turn you off or tune you out right away and get back to what they we're talking about with there friends. But if your coming out with something like this (singing) they maybe like "oh hey I know that song" and really hear what you need to say, and grab them right away. So make sure that your picking some songs that there going to appeal to your audience that your playing to, whether it's a coffee house or it's a bar or where ever your playing in a state fair or whatever. You may have to learn some songs that will cater to that audience even a little Johnny Cash isn't so bad once in a while, I love Johnny Cash I'm not a really huge country fan. That's not saying anything bad about country it's just my personality what I like isn't necessarily country, but it doesn't mean I'm not going to pick a country song once in a while, if I'm going to that audience. If you have CD's to sell your going to sell more CD's cause of it because they like you and because they like what you play that's what it's all about people getting to understand who you are and enjoying what you do."
