Series Summary

Hot stone massage is a Swedish style of massage in which heated, round or oval stones, usually smooth basalt stones, of varying sizes and weights are placed on the body to treat sore muscles. The stones are heated in water or an oven and then laid out over key muscle groups, like along the spine or between the toes for example, offering a soothing and relaxing healing experience. Though intense, hot stone massage is gentler than deep tissue or therapeutic massage, but has many of the same benefits.

Expert massage therapist Jinilee Reavis offers an introduction to hot stone massage therapy in this free video series. She offers information about heating the stones, how the combination of heat and weight is therapeutic for relaxing muscles, and when to apply lotion to maximize the benefits of hot stone therapy. Jinilee's demonstrations are easy to follow and accompanied by explanations and suggestions throughout.

Video Transcript

"Hello my name is Jinilee Reavis and I'm a massage therapist here at Veronika's Color Salon and Spa and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. Now we are going to be speaking about stone massage. Stone massage I love because it allows therapist to do so much more with the stone massage. I would explain that later but what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the stones out. This is kind of like a oven and it sets it on a certain temperature and also have a sanitized button as well. So it keeps it all sanitized and heated for however massages we have during the day it is always ready. What I'm going to do is I'm going to place the stones on the client. It has been in there for 10-15 minutes so they are not that hot, they are still warm. If it is really hot and they are in there all day what I do is put a towel on your back and place the stones so it is not directly on the skin to where it will burn. It would penetrate through the towel and on to the skin relaxing the muscles."
