"Hello, on behalf of Expert Village, my name is Joe. I own The Vug local jeweler in Salt Lake City. I want to talk a little bit about stones and stone weights. How stones are sold. How we judge or how we character stones. There's many different shapes of course. Round, oval, emerald cut, princess cut. Many different shapes. Stones are generally sold, faceted stones are general sold in like diamonds, rubies and sapphires are sold in caret weight. This is a caret scale. The caret is one point zero. So the half caret is point five zero. A caret and a half is one point five zero. This is a one point two three. So it's basically one and a quarter caret stone, diamond. How we use them for setting, a jeweler would say, this is a six millimeter stone. That's how we judge what kind of crown, or what kind of setting it's going to go in. Sometimes pieces like Lapis Lazuli or turquoise is sold by the gram. This is a one gram piece. Maybe it's five dollars a gram, it's only going to be a five dollar stone. Depending on what kind of stones there are is basically how there sold."
