Scrapbooking is a craft that utilizes many different skills—photography, page layout and design. Scrapbooking has been around since people were able to have photos in their possession. It is a way to visually preserve moments, feelings or experiences in your life that might otherwise be written down or forgotten. It all started in 1976 when Marielen W. Christensen began keeping a book of photographs in new devices called sheet protectors. By 1980 she had assembled over 50 of these books and was asked to display them at the World Conference on Records in Salt Lake City. Since then the door of scrapbooking has been opened and flooded by people wanting to find unique ways to remember their pasts and experiences.

"Hi, you are watching Expert Village and today we are learning all about scrap booking. Today actually what we would learn is how to compose a layout. I have a great guest with me. You are going to love her, Sonya Shepherd from the Crop Circle. How are you doing Sonya? I'm good how are you Gracie? I'm doing great. Great. So tell us a little bit how did you get started doing this, all of this scrap booking and becoming such a expert at it. Okay. Well it was actually back in high school and we did a big field trip to Washington D.C it was a week long study program. It was really great great trip and then the assignment coming back was to scrapbook your photographs and that is how we reported on our trip to D.C. It was actually at the time of creative memories was just getting started and creative memories was the pioneer in the scrap booking movement. In terms of making sure that everything was going to be high quality and actually incorporating those elements into your photographs. So starting with creative memories and back then all the pages you know kind of look the same and it was eight and a half by eleven scrap booking. Just really how the industry has just mushroomed and blossomed in the last you know in the several years. It has been a lot of fun. So you have more options now? You have a lot more options now scrap booking is the number one craft in America then. Number one! Number one well check that out. Number one craft in America it is just growing by leaps and bounds. There are so many companies now offering so many different options from everything to albums, to tools, papers, and decorative elements you want it you can find it for your scrapbook. That is great! So what are we going to learn next? Well we are going to talk about some basic design elements when it comes to composing your layouts. A layout is the pages that you use your scrapbooks. You have a couple of different options on how to arrange things so that do look very ecstatically pleasing and so we are going to look at that. Great well that is coming up next stay tuned. "
