"Interviewer: When do you know you're ready for management? Grace: When you got some paying gigs. Interviewer: Can you make a living doing this? Grace: Yes you can, actually, but it takes a little while to make a living. You can get paid anywhere from a hundred dollars to ten thousand dollars per appearance. Depending on your name and your...Interviewer: How many years do you have to spend on the road in small little towns? Grace: That varies for each person, you know, if somebody's got a name here in LA because they're on a sitcom or whatever, then they're going to get paid more even though they might not be as good as somebody that's been on the road for twenty years and that's done stand up for twenty years. So, it's really variable, it varies on your star meter kind of thing. Interviewer: Ok, so how do you get jobs? How do you book jobs on the road, Grace? How do you? Do you book yourself? Grace: Well, you start, actually, if you go out there and network with other comedians. You will get booked in rooms, first the ones that are not paid, and then ones that are paid. And then those comedians will also tell you who the bookers are. And so you look them up. One website that's really great is ChuckleMonkey.com. Interviewer: And what is that about? Grace: They have all kinds of information on stand up comedy. Including all the open mics, and the book rooms all around the country. Interviewer: What if you live in a small town in the middle of the country? Do you need to move to New York? Grace: That's what I was going to say. Move. Get the hell out. Interviewer: Get the hell out of your tiny little town? Grace: Yeah exactly."
