Now that we have a cylinder, we're ready to shape this into something useful, something that we want. I'm going to show you how to make a mug. In this case, I'm going to make a mug that has kind of a feminine design, to it. So, I want to take my sturdy firm flat rib and use it. I push in, from the outside, with the rib and my fingers, on the inside, are just above, where I'm pushing in so that I'm pulling that clay. I'm going to just turn it into the shape that I'm looking for. Now I'm going to reverse where the fingers and the rib are so that I can get an outward turn. I like to push in the bottom, just to get a little bit of a curve. Now, very important thing to do, before you take this piece off the wheel, is to take your flat rib and hold it at an angle and slide it under, giving an undercut to the piece. That serves a couple of purposes. The first one, it makes it easier to take off the wheel, the second is, when you're glazing, you can't have glaze on the bottom of the pot. If you have an undercut, the area that's not glazed won't show, from above, and it looks much nicer, in the finished piece. So, that's the mug.
