Summary: Make sure to finish painting your can before attaching anything to it. Learn how to make a children's marching drum in this free crafts video.
"Before we start attaching things to the can, I want to make sure that we finish painting it because it's going to need to dry. And it's not good to be painting the can if we'd applied any decorations to it. So I want to do that first. Now our white based paint has dried. So I'm going to take my colored paint and start applying different coats of colors around the drum. I'm using purple now. And we see that it goes on nicely and it covers everything. With the white based paint, we don't see anything showing through from the bottom. I'm going to make the entire drum purple from the outside. And then afterwards, if I want I can put other decorations with colored paint on top of the purple. But the solid, I'm going to make the entire drum a solid color purple. For this type of project, I recommend using an acrylic paint. It's a little bit thicker and it goes on nice on to the can. Other types of paints like the water colors and such are fine or much better when doing projects on paper. But the acrylic paint works really well on the can. Now once this layer of paint is dry, you can go ahead and start applying different colors of paints to decorate it. Or you can just use permanent markers. It goes right on to this coat of paint really nice. And it's a lot easier, especially when you're painting the project. Every step of paint, every coat that you put on that needs to dry. And it takes time. So if you want to just decorate, finish decorating the drum, you can use some permanent markers. And it will go really, really well right over this coat of paint that we're applying the acrylic paint. So once we finish putting this layer of paint on, we put it aside and wait for it to dry. And once it's dry, we'll be able to go ahead and put our strips of paper and string and all of the decorations that we want. So now I'm showing you how to paint the outside of the drum. And get ready for decorating."
