"Hello! My name is Duane Carter and on behalf of Expert Village, I am going to be talking today about learning how to listen to and appreciate music. A listener should be able to recognize various styles of music. Often times, a listener gravitates to a certain style and does not move too far away from that style of music. This is due to cultural and environmental influences. These listeners utilize the five elements of music that are arranged in a particular pattern that whether they are aware or not become accustomed to while listening. Active listeners tend to more collected in their musical taste this is due to their understanding and appreciation in music. How does one broaden their musical prospectives? One way is to understand the three most common compositional devices; repetition, variation and contrasts. By recognizing these, you will become more understanding and more appreciative of other styles of music. "
