on 1/23/2009 Wonderful explanation of doing the single crochet stitch into a crocheted chain. Elissa has mastered the single crochet stitch! Unfortunately, if single crochet were made with such a large top loop (like the first 3) it would ruin the gauge of a project and the tightness that is often desired in single crochet. Even creation of stitches is important in measuring gauge.

"Hi, my name's Elissa with ExpertVillage.com and today I'm going to show you how crochet a scarf. So, now that we've done a chain stitch I'm going to lay this down and show you how the rest of this is going to go. We've just done one row going in one direction and we're going to be stitching in the opposite direction and go zig-zag back and forth until we've made the whole length of our scarf. So, I've made twelve chain stitches here and now I'm going to show you the single crochet stitch which is another fundamental stitch in crocheting. So, get a good grip on your yarn, like I showed you, and on this stitch you're going to see there is a loop made by two threads on the top and one thread on the bottom and you're going to want to put your hook through that little loop, OK? And, soo then we wrap the hook around the yarn like we did before and pull it through just the first loop, not the second one. So, you have two loops on your hook. After that you're going to hook again and pull it through both loops and that's your first single crochet. So, I'll do that again. You get your second stitch right here, you have the two threads on the top and the one thread on the bottom and you put your hook through that stitch, you grab your thread, pull it through just that stitch, so you have two loops on your hook, pull the yarn through both hooks, and there's your second stitch. So, you're going to want to go through this whole row to make your first row on your scarf. So, I can show you again. You can see the loops now, there's two threads on the top, one on the bottom, put your hook through, pull the thread through the first loop, pull the thread through both loops. And you want to continue on until you get to the very end of the row. OK, and then the last one. And there, you've finished the first row of your scarf."
