Crochet, similar to knitting, consists of pulling loops of yarn through other loops of yarn in order to create fabric. The difference between crocheting and knitting however, is that in crochet only one loop is active at a time, and a crochet hook is used instead of knitting needles. Crocheting became popular in Europe in the early 1800's and has gone through several periods of popularity in the recent past, with a revival of handcrafts and do it yourself projects. There are a variety of crochet stitches and when combined with brightly colored or white yarn, a crochet fan can create a wide range of beautiful fabrics to decorate their home or give away as a unique gift.
In this free video series, our expert Elissa Marie Rodgers will demonstrate how to crochet a scarf. You will get step-by-step instructions on how to pick the right yarn for your scarf, and how to crochet each stitch to create your own homemade scarf. Our expert will also show you how to make a variety of decorative fringes for your scarf and even give you tips on how to wear the scarf you crochet. A crocheted scarf makes an excellent gift for family and friends, and is a wonderful winter weather accessory.
"Hi my name is Elissa with expertvillage.com and today I'm going to show you how to crochet a scarf. Today I'm going to show you how to make a couple of different kinds of scarfs. These are 2 that I've made and both of these scarfs are going to be a little bit different from each other. This one is wider and shorter and this one is going to be narrow and really long and both of these scarfs are made from 3 essential stitches that I'll teach you. We're going to have a single crochet stitch, a double crochet stitch and a triple crochet stitch and then with those 3 stitches you can make all kinds of variations to make a specialty stitch just like this one. It's kind of a wider chain stitch."

on 8/2/2008 Loved this video. It taught me that I was doing some basic stitches wrong. I have been crocheting since I was a kid but never could get it quite right. Thanks Elissa.
