"On behalf of Expert Village. I am Emily DeCola. I am here at the Puppet Kitchen in New York City and we re going to talk about marionettes. So when you?re first dealing with a ball on a string, a marionette or a pendulum. Depending on the context. You have to just figure at how to cope with swing and be able to stop the puppet. You also want to be able to control it in space if you want to have any character driven movement involved in your performance. It s really amazing by the way what you can do in terms of character moment with the ball and a string. And if anybody has ever seen Nate Wilson perform 'Ballso the Magnificent Routine', you?ll know what I m talking about I highly recommend it. In any case most of us want to be able to do more with a puppet than merely move it through space whether that s laterally or vertically. And that s where many strings come in the first step of course is adding a second string. Which allows, us this is a beautiful but equally simple puppet which has two strings on it. Which allows us to move the puppets orientation and space not just by moving the puppet but by allowing it to look somewhere other than its immediate focus."
