Using a Pin Tool in Pottery

"DAVID GIBSON: I'm going to clean up my spiral with our pin tool a little bit. I'm just going to take this in and try not to touch too much and pick up any of those little spots that interrupt our eye visually when we come around. I just come in with my pin tool and take those spots off if they're here--sometimes I'll throw this and I won't have to sort of clean up at all with this. I also--here we've got a little bit of a--I can form this edge one last time, and keep that nice and tight. Then come back in with our rib here, plastic rib and try to lay this down one more time. I'm trying to get it nice and flat. There. I think that looks pretty good. Remember one last time to compress the edge of our pot. I want to talk about our pot shrinking or our nice flat rim turning into a dog bowl which often happens. As the clay shrinks and our nice flat rim that we have to our platter starts to shrink, the rim will come up a little bit and turn more into a dog bowl. Sometimes I'll take the pot or the platter off the wheel and let it set up and then I'll re-wet it, recompress and try to push that rim back down and try to get it nice and flat. So I'll take the pot off the wheel, let it set up a little bit, add a little bit of water, put it back onto the wheel, and push that rim back down to get it it's--"
