I am here to talk to you about transporting your musical instrument equipment on a plane. If you are traveling on a plane to a show or to the studio, chances are the gig is important enough or you may be able to rent equipment for the show or be borrowing something somewhere. That is the best option because traveling on the plane is very difficult for lots of things. Any kind of baggage you don't want to have too much of it. If you are going to be traveling with guitars, use flight cases obviously because those are easier to pack. Never ever ever use a soft case. Keep in mind that things do get damaged in airplanes very easy. Luggage shifts around so really use the strongest protection you have on the airplane. Hard shell cases all the time. Before your flight, check with the airport, check with the airlines and about security restrictions and luggage restrictions for what you can bring on the airplane. It is important to have these things figured out before you are at the gate with all of your equipment. Now if you are presented with a choice between carrying on items and having to check them, always carry them on. Once you check in an item it leaves your sight and who knows what is going to happen to it. Don't trust baggage handlers to take care of your equipment because we have all seen them throw baggage all over the place, so you don't want that to be your guitar that is getting thrown around. You may have to decide between checking your guitar and checking your bag that has your laptop and or your MP3 players, magazines and snacks and fun stuff like that for the flight. It is worth the sacrifice to check that bag and keep your guitar with you because otherwise, who knows that is going to happen to it.
