Series Summary

Sewing is an ancient craft that still has remarkable relevance in today's modern world. The art of stitching and assembling pieces of fabric together either by hand or with the use of a modern sewing machine is still a valuable skill and can be used for industry, home, or artistic purposes. Industrial sewing is usually done with the use of machines, but for seamstresses, alteration givers, and most casual sewers, an old fashioned needle and thread is still incredibly useful and more often than not the desired method since it enables far more detail. Tailoring and dressmaking require not only a needle and thread, but also other tools and materials that you can find easily at arts and crafts stores.

In this free video series, expert seamstress and designer Candy Cane-Canncel teaches you how to design and add pockets to your clothing. You learn how to make inseam pockets, patch pockets, and flaps for your pockets. Candy will show you how to draw a pattern, how to trace and cut a pattern, how to hem and press your pocket, and finally how to attach it to the garment. You learn how to arrange facing pockets, and great tips for keeping things neat. Add a flap to your jeans. Add a patch pocket to that boring dress shirt. It's all here.

Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Candi Cane Canncel with Expert Village. I'm a clothing designer and sewing instructor based in Los Angeles and I've been sewing since I was 14 and I absolutely adore sewing. It's one of my favorite arts and one of my favorite hobbies but in addition to being something that is so fun, I also think it's such a great skill to have. Because you can make anything instead of going to this store and buying something for your home, you can just make it. Today's topic is pocket specifically how to make a really easy patch pocket, how to do a inseam pocket and then also how to attach a decorative flap to your pocket. That is also is going to act as a closure. There are so many pockets out there and you'll find them in any number of things. These are probably the easiest ones you can master so why don't we go ahead and get started."
