"Hi, I'm Christine Pachini for Expert Village and today I'm going to teach you some basic knitting techniques. So here's the stockinette swatch we're going to be measuring gauge on today. This was made on size 5 needles. Here's a little penny to show you the gauge. To gauge the size of it. And we're just going to use a tape measure today to measure the gauge. You can just use a regular ruler or a tape measure. They also sell these neat gauge measurers which is basically a metal ruler with a little window cut out to measure exactly 3 inches or 2 inches. I usually just end up using a plain old tape measure or ruler. First of all just stretch it out a little bit each way so it's kind of naturally hanging the way your fabric will hang. Get out your trusty tape measure. And I like to measure over about 2 inches because I never usually want to knit more than that for the swatch because I'm anxious to get started on my project. And I like to, again each of these is a stitch so, find a nice place to put it down and start here this is going to be our first stitch, see how that v is formed there, that's one stitch. So; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. So that's twelve stitches for two inches. And again, most patterns will call for a gauge over a four inch or ten centimeter length, so if it's twelve stitches for two inches, obviously twenty-four for four inches and so on."
