Summary: Fixing frayed yarn ends when crocheting is simple with a lighter if you have synthetic yarn. Watch this free video clip with a crochet expert to show you how to safely melt and lock in your crochet designs.
"Now, that we've finished our hat and got it to where we want it to be, we're going to go ahead, and clean it up, and get the ends completely done. So, we're going to cut off our yarn, and with this extra piece, we're just going to weave it backwards into our pattern. Just stick your needle under your loops, and just weave it back and forth. And, this will really just kind of help keep it hidden in there. And there's nothing too extra complicated. You pull on it and it disappears. But what you see is, because we cut and tied off our yarn to change the color, we've got a little bit of fraying. So, what we're going to do is, we're going to trim that off. And what's really neat and handy, is if you have an artificial fiber yarn, meaning like acrylic or nylon or polyester, anything like that, you can melt it. Because it's based in plastic. If you have a pure wool or pure cotton yarn, do not do this. You will burn your fibers. But if you have an artificial yarn, what you can do is, you can take your lighter, and once you have your flame, we're not going to put your yarn right on there. You're just going to kind of, leave it really close, and you'll see the fibers just kind of jump back. But with your big piece, you'll just kind of start to see it retract, and just kind of melt away. You see, we got a little bit of brown on there. Now be careful, when you're touching it, depending on how much you melted, it could be very hot. But, you'll see it's really kind of hard right there, a little bit crispy. Because you melted it down, and turned it back into, into its plastic nature. But you're able to get rid of all of those frays. We're going to go ahead and do this side as well. Then you'll just see all the fibers just kind of melting back, just like in the Wizard of Oz. And there we go. We've got a nice clean and smooth end. We've got a nice clean hat, it fits really nice on top of the head, like I said if you want to, you can make it longer. It's completely up to you, add as much length as you like, as many colors as you like. But, it's just really nice, simple hat and it fits really tight to the head. And, have fun with it."
