"What we are going to start working on now is the basic chain. This is the stitch you need to know to start every pattern. Every pattern I have started has started with this way. You are going to take your yarn and to start it we are going to wrap it around the finger and start it right about there and you will see that it kind of makes like a pretzel shape and then you are going to take your needle and go between here to pull this piece of yarn like this and just pull it up and we have our first loop. Okay so we keep our needle in here and for good yarn control you want to weave it through your fingers so under your pinky, over your ring, over your pointer so you can hold it like this between your thumb. Now you are going to take this yarn and you are going to go over the needle like this and pull this through your first loop and this is how we start out chain. You are going to continue just wrapping around and pulling through with your hook. Now this takes some practice to keep your tension consistent but you want to keep it fairly loose so it is easier to work with throughout your pattern. The tighter it is the harder it is going to be to get your needle back through so just keep doing like this and depending on what the pattern is you are going to keep going for your desired length. But this is the chain length, this is how it works. If you are a beginner I suggest that you practice this before you attempt anything major. This is what it looks like on top, it looks like a braid and from the side you will see those little tiny loops underneath and we are going to use those in many patterns as key points to use so we know where to stick our needle."
