One of the easiest ways to introduce your child to the world of artistic exploration is to allow them the freedom to initiate and participate in their very own art projects. One very simple but truly fun project for children and adults is the creation of homemade cards using a variety of art supplies and, naturally, creative vision! Parents who are drawn to such timeless and innovative hobbies as scrap-booking and homemade frame-making will delight in projects like our expert's featured here in this series. Your kids will love creating their own shapes with the greeting cards and watching their mind's eye create incredible cards for friends and family, and you will open your creative spirit wide as you help your child discover their artistic potential.
"Hi this is Brenda and today we are working on our pop-up cards. We are using our 5 x 8 index cards which are the heavy card stock material. We will be using glue, glitter, pens, and scissors and if you want to, we can also use rubber stamps. We take one of our 5 x 8 cards like this and we fold it in half. We will also need an under sheet later. I am using yellow for this project. It is going to be the same size 5 x 8 folded in half and later in the project we are going to be using this as our liner to cover up the cuttings that we will be making in this index card. So we just put that liner to the side and we will use that a little bit later. Now I am going to be cutting a heart out of this card because it is going to be a wedding card that we are going to be using. On the folded side we are just going to draw half of a heart. We are going to be cutting. We are going to stop short. We are not going to go all the way around. We cut underneath and do the point side of the heart. Once again, we don’t cut out the entire heart because then it would be disconnected from the card. So we will open it like this. As you can see it is still connected. Now to add just a little extra layer to it I am going to cut out an inside heart and this heart I am going to completely cut out. Just cut out half of the heart. It actually looks like an ear when you are cutting it out and this way it gives just a little bit of something extra to the project. Keep working with it like this, keep folding it and it will be a pop-up like this in just a few moments. Here is our finished card. I have embellished this with a little glitter. Put school glue on it and sprinkle glitter on it and wrote a message of best wishes. If we would like to, we could add ribbon later on or stickers if we like and as I mentioned earlier, here is our little under liner that is going to cover up the cuttings so that we don’t see where we cut into the heart area. We will glue this on. If we like to, we can put a pretty white ribbon around it and tie it in a pretty bow. Perhaps put the bride and grooms name in calligraphy on the front and when they open it up, they find a glittering pop-up card. "
