" Hi! I’m Candi Cane-Canncel on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip I’m going to show you how to make gathers along the top of our vintage inspired apron. The first thing you do is find your top and what we’re going to do is set the machine to a wide stitch which is a basting stitch about a 4 or 5 and you’re going to be running two rolls one on top of the other just along the top. Okay our first roll is done now we’re going to be doing a second roll about a quarter of an inch lower than the first roll. Now in order to create the gathers what you do is you take the two top threads one from each roll, you pull them out leaving the bottom threads just hanging and you’re just going to gently pull and as you pull you see how it creates gathers. You just pull and you keep sliding the gathers across and we’re going to pull this in so that the measurement went from will go from a 24 inch across to about a 22 inch so it’s going to be about 2 inches worth of gathers. And just pull all the way across…and you want to keep your gathers as even as possible, okay that looks good. The next step that we’re going to do is actually put in a permanent stitch, we use just a basting stitch to create the gathers and the reason why we I like to use two stitches is I think I gives a cleaner, nicer sort of gather as oppose to just using one roll together, it just gives like a cleaner look. So now we set the machine to a lower stitch about a 2 ½ and we’re just going to put it back in the machine and just stitch this in so that the gathers stay permanently. So it’s important to know that when you are stitching in your gathers in a permanent stitch you want to go slowly so that the gathers don’t slip and slide or you don’t loose any of the gathers. And there you are simple gathers. For more info on this topic feel free to check out my website at candiland.com. "
