Series Summary

As you walk into a Christian church, your eyes are immediately drawn to the elaborate patterns and colors of the windows. As the light floods through, images of the legendary and mythical events of Christian history are illuminated in colorful glass. This ancient art form is known as stained glass, and many of these ancient stained-glass works have survived for centuries. Throughout its thousand-year history, stained glass has been displayed in many different forms and varieties. However, the most common (as any connoisseur of religious traditions will tell you) is depicted on the walls and windows of Christian churches.

Though the religious connotations of the art still exist, a modern movement has also shaped the stained-glass craft. For instance, many use stained glass in their own windows at home. Some have designed stained-glass patterns that are abstract and creative. There are many ways to solder stained glass, and because of this, new forms of stained-glass art are emerging everyday. For those who lack the expertise of soldering and cutting glass, many have discovered the beauty of sun catchers. A smaller form of stained-glass art, these sun catchers have become a favorite craft of children and adults.

One of the main ways to make stained glass projects is copper foiling. Copper foiling is what connects the glass pieces together. Before starting a stained glass project, learn the supplies you need for copper foiling. Learn how to pick the right color of copper foil. Also, learn how to use copper foil sheets. If you don't know how to use a soldering iron, our expert shows you how to do this as well. So, what are you waiting for? Start learning about copper foil and stained glass today!

Video Transcript

"Hi. Today we're making copper foiling. We're going to be doing the butterfly for a sun catcher in our window. I want to go through the list of supplies for you. I'm going to start with the copper foiling because there's several different thicknesses and widths and different designs. There's also sheet copper. So, and also colored as well. So let me start by, these are our copper foils right here. And you have three eighths of an inch, you have sixteenths of an inch, seven thirty seconds of an inch and also quarter inch. There are also some other thicknesses, but these are what we have here today. Today we're going to be using the seven thirty seconds for our project. Depending on what type of project you'll be using will determine what thickness or width of copper foiling that you will be using for your project. Whether you want more of your sauter to show or less, and how much strength you want to add to your project."
