"Once you have the entire quilt laid out on the floor, the next step would be to pin the numbers down the side of the quilt. We found it was very beneficial to have each row identified as number one, two, and so forth, so we're going to use safety pins. You could use a straight pin, but you do get pinched a lot with the straight pin, so the safety pin works out a little bit better. As you pin these, you may want to pin them a little away from the seam allowance, so that they don't get caught in the seam as you sew. After the numbers have been safety pinned on each row all the way down to thirty, the next step would be to start picking the rows up, to be able to sew them. To do this without confusion at the sewing machine, it's really important to clip each brick together horizontally, so that when you get to the sewing machine, you have everything in the same pattern that we just formed by placing it on the floor. We have found using the spring-style clothespins, that they work very, very well. If you don't have clothespins, you can use chip clips as well, anything that's strong enough to hold six layers of fabric together. This is really critical, because when you get to the sewing machine, it's easy to turn these bricks around in a different order, so to maintain the pattern, it's really best to clip them together while they're on the floor.
