"What makes the orchid unique is the fact that when we look at the plant, the form of the plant always has one petal that is formed into a very unique structure, which we typically call the lip. It has additional features if we look where the seeds are produced, they'll be produced underneath the flower. When we look at the flower and pull it apart we'll find that the structure is has both male and female parts fused into one. The seeds that are produced in this plant are very unique in that they have no ability to support the developing embryo. So we have to add nutrients to them. We do this in the laboratory. In nature a fungus does this and a very unique symbiotic relationship between the orchid and the fungus is developed. "
