on 1/26/2009 My Orchids base (round thick area before the leafs) are shriviling and are not plump. I water once a week and fertilize about once a month. They do not seem to be holding water, although the soil (bark for orchids stays somewhat moist. Why are they shrinking up? I need some help because I do not want them to die. Can anyone help me and my orchids?

"Many orchid growers? start by growing in a windowsill and part of it is finding a windowsill which is adaptable and which will provide the conditions that your orchids will like. One of the rules of thumb you can use in doing this is if you grow African Violets and they do well for you in that particular window sill, a plant like phalaenopsis will be just as happy growing side by side. In fact, that's why many orchid growers also grow things like African Violets because they are compatible to the same conditions. Now are there other plants? Well, as you start growing, you begin to say, "Well, I'd like to expand my horizons and go with some other plants". And that's where you can begin experimenting with what can be adaptable to your windowsill. How can you find out what's adaptable to your windowsill? Well, there's a lot of ways you can do it. Some of it's by reading and some by talking to someone who grows orchids."
