"Other types of containers that we find commonly used, although they are more difficult to use if you are doing window culture, is a basket. A basket has certain advantages in that in nature when you walk where orchids grow, they have a lot of water fall on them but very shortly, the roots are left to dry out. The problem with wooden baskets is that they tend to decay fairly rapidly and over a period of 2 or three years may break down and you have to replace them. So, what we do today is to change and move into wire baskets which may over a period of years sort of break down because they rust. And so today, we use plastic baskets because they tend to be much longer lasting. There are other reasons to use some baskets when you grow orchids. And the fact is that some orchids don't behave the way you want them to do it. They aren't going to show their flowers up in the air. They are going to put their flowers down underneath. And that's why one of these baskets also serves for that kind of orchid."
