"WILLIAM HUTCHINSON: We have to look at the historical perspective to find out where the names of orchids come from. And the first person to actually begin the modern way of identifying and naming plants was Carolus Linnaeus from Sweden who in 1735 published the series of books among which was Species Plantarum. The taxonomy of all plants, not just orchids but all plants as based upon their floral structure. And it was fraught with the problems of the times, in that, we did not know what we know today about plant structure and form. Because he found most orchids growing on trees, he gave the orchids entirely the name Epidendrum which means to grow literally on a tree. "
