"Dimmer switch sizing. As you will notice, I am pointing to the original light switch and it is much smaller than the new dimmer switch. That is because the dimmer switch not only has a switching circuit, it has an electronic dimming circuit inside. When we take the original switch out, it fit very well because of its size. We now must take this new dimmer switch and do a fit check in the electrical blocks to make sure that we will be able to install it once we hooked up the wiring. Now I will take the dimmer switch and fit it into the existing hole to see if it will fit where the light switch came out of. I have moved the wires out of my way and I take the dimmer switch and try to fit the mounting holes over where the screws will be going in to check to see if it will fit in. In this case, it appears that it will fit in all right. Some times the amount of wires that are in a box will prevent this and some rewiring would have to occur before it would be done. "
