"Fireworks safety. If you live in the city, it is illegal to shoot off fireworks within the city. If you live outside the city, you make sure that you’re in a well cleared out area, that whenever you’re placing the fireworks on the ground, no grass or leaves have a chance of catching on fire. Do not shoot them up on trees. Don’t shoot them where there’s a group of people where the fireworks could come down. Remember, if a firework does not go off after you first light it, do not go and pick it up. Just consider that it is still lit and can go off at any time. One of the most common calls that we get as firefighters are when fireworks are starting grass fires. People are not shooting the fireworks in a well cleared out area. I don’t think that they realize the power that a firework has and that it can start a fifty acre grass fire. "
