"In the event of a fire in the house, you make sure that you stay low underneath the heat and underneath the smoke. You come up to the door; check the door with the back of your hand. If the door’s cold, then you can open up the door and go through. If the door’s hot, you need to not open up the door- you need to find an alternative exit, whether it be a window or another door you can go to. If there’s smoke coming out from underneath the door, try to put a blanket or a towel underneath that, or right underneath the door not to let any of the smoke come in, then you need to also find another alternative. Make sure to check each door in the house on the way out to know where the fire is and which door not to open. When you’re checking the door for heat, make sure not to touch the doorknob, because that is going to transfer the heat a lot quicker than the wood does, because it’s metal and the rest of door is not metal."
